Half or full-day lessons for experienced climbers who want to develop the skills needed for leading rock climbs. We emphasize route finding, strategy, and protecting the lead. The use of various types of protection devices will be demonstrated and practiced including chocks, cams, and slings. Students practice placing anchors. With a top-rope for safety, students "lead" pitches while placing their own protection. The instructor seconds the pitches and removes the protection, evaluating the placements.
This lesson can provide an ideal boost for students familiar with the basics of rock climbing who have the requisite experience climbing second and are ready to begin leading. We maintain a low student to instructor ratio in Lead Lessons and, like all private lessons, they can be scheduled at your convenience. Do your first lead under the close supervision of an instructor.
Our rock climbing lessons are held year-round in the Boulder, Colorado area. Although Boulder is famous for summer rock climbing, its mild winters make climbing quite pleasant year-round. Autumn is especially beautiful with sunny days and fewer climbers. We also offer lessons in other areas. Students should be familiar with fundamental climbing techniques.
* What to Bring:
We provide all technical equipment including helmets, rock shoes, and harnesses. Students are encouraged to bring any of their own equipment they wish to use.
* Required Equipment:
- Approach shoes (light hiking or jogging shoes for walking to the climbs).
- Rugged comfortable, loose-fitting clothing appropriate for the season.
- Water.
* Suggested Items:
- UV protective sunglasses or glacier goggles.
- Sun screen.
- Food or snacks.
- Camera.
