We provide expert guides to the many great fisheries of northern New Mexico, including high alpine lakes and small mountain streams as well as the mighty Rio Grande itself.
Rio Grande: Half-day, full-day, two-day and three-day float/wade trips. Rainbow, brown, and native Rio Grande cutthroat trout, and northern pike. These are wild trout, easily spooked. They grow to a large size: the record rainbow is 32 inches, the record pike is 48 inches. Catch-and-release taught and encouraged. Riverside camping or lodging away from the river. A good fishery year-round, best October-November.
San Juan River: Half-day, full-day, two-day and three-day float/wade trips. Tail-water fishery. Rainbow and brown trout. These are large, wily trout, used to seeing people. Catch-and-release regulations. Consistently named one of the top five trout fisheries in the U.S. Camping or lodging near the river. Good year-round, best November-February.
Rio Chama: Two-day or three-day float/wade trips. Tail-water fishery. Brown and rainbow trout. Large fish, regularly taken. The New Mexico state record brown comes from the Chama. Catch-and-release taught and encouraged. Streamside lodging or camping. Good year-round, best September-November.
High Alpine Lakes: One-day, two-day or three-day trips. Fishing from shore, raft or trolling. Cutthroat and rainbow trout, and Kokanne salmon. Catch-and-release taught and encouraged. Big variety of water from large trolling lakes to private stock ponds. Scenic, high mountain settings, some lakes as high as 11,000 feet. Several lakes have good vehicle access, others require hiking or horseback. Lakeside camping or lodging in nearby towns. Best July-October.
Streams: Half-day and full-day trips to a wide variety of wadeable streams in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. Rainbow, cutbow, native Rio Grande cutthroat, and brown trout. Catch-and-release taught and encouraged. Good from July on, best September-November.
