Our sailing school – America’s Best Sailing School operates on both Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair. On Lake Erie, Fair Wind Sailing School is the only asa certfication school. In fact Fair Wind Sailing School is the only ASA affiliate in Ohio. Our office in Toledo, Ohio is co-located with the fine sail makers at Quantum Sails. Our sailing base on Lake Erie, is conveniently located on the Michigan - Ohio border at Toledo Beach Marina providing easy access from Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland and other locations in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. We believe Western Lake Erie is an outstanding location for sailing instruction with open water, excellent sailing destinations and a well developed sailing community. Lake Erie also provides warmer water (typically 75 degrees in Summer) than sailing destinations further north or west on Lake Michigan or Lake Huron. In addition, the abundance of beautiful lighthouses, historic monuments and diverse ports of call make Western Lake Erie one of our favorite cruising grounds.
From our sailing base on Lake Erie we offer our week long Instant Bareboater live-aboard sailing lessons on a regular schedule. The Instant Bareboater sailing lessons provide ASA certification from beginning sailing through Bareboat Chartering (ASA 101, 103 and 104). Typical itineraries include stops at the fabulous Lake Erie Islands as well as other fine ports in Coastal Ohio and Michigan. We also offer our Instant Cruiser sailing lessons on Lake Erie. This class provides weekend sailing sailing instruction beginning Friday evening and ending Sunday afternoon and covers certifications in ASA 101 and 103 (Basic Cruising). Overnight accommodations can be made for out of town guests for any of these classes. Our sailing school also offers sailing instruction in Coastal Navigation, Celestial Navigation, Basic Sailing and Advanced Sailing at our Lake Erie sailing school. Due to irregular demand for these sailing lessons, they are scheduled upon request.
We also operate on nearby Lake St. Clair in Metro-Detroit. Our Lake St Clair sailing school office is in Harrision Township on the Clinton River and our boats are based at the legendary Bayview YC. On Lake St Clair, we offer a regular schedule of our Instant Cruiser sailing lessons which incorporates ASA certification through Basic Cruising (ASA 101 and 103). On Lake St Clair we offer both weekend classes (Friday evening through Sunday afternoon) and weekday classes (6-9 pm Monday through Friday). We also offer sailing instruction in Coastal Navigation and Basic Sailing at our Lake St Clair sailing school. Due to irregular demand for these sailing lessons, they are scheduled upon request.
Lake St Clair is a haven for racing sailboats and Fair Wind Sailing School is active in the local racing scene. Our Captains hold memberships in Bayview YC, and the DRYA. Our students can take advantage of this unique opportunity to get race training at Fair Wind or to crew on a number of highly competitive yachts racing on Lake St Clair on weeknights and weekends.
