Excellent salmon fishing, incredible wild-life viewing and spectacular scenery... Fishing with Warren is definitely more than just a great fishing vacation. The area is well known for diversity of salmon catch (Chinook, Spring, King, Sockeye, Coho, Silvers, Pink, Chum and the magnificent Tyee Salmon), spectacular coastal rainforest scenery and abundant wild-life like bears, bald eagles, sea lions and whales. Vancouver Island is a bird watchers paradise; bring your binoculars and your birding list.
Warren is a great host and has shown the incredible fishing and spectacular scenery to some of the world's top anglers. He's shown Orcas to movie stars and politicians and fed the eagles with corporate executives, families, couples and single anglers. Warren has been fishing professionally for over 40 years. His family founded and operated world-famous April Point Lodge for 51 years, until 1998 when the resort was sold.
Salmon fishing is something that just seems to get into your blood. Warren is still fishing daily from May through October in the waters around Campbell River and Quadra Island. Warren's career as a fishing guide has acquainted him with anglers from all over the world. He has fished in Belize for tarpon and bonefish, is a frequent visitor to Christmas Island where he's fished for bonefish and trevally, traveled to New Zealand and Chile for trout and Cabo San Lucas and Costa Rica for marlin. Maybe because he was raised in BC, he loves fishing here in Campbell River for salmon best of all.
Warren founded the April Point Fly Fishing Club in 1974 with the help of Bill Nelson. Warren was also a key player in the twinning program between Campbell River and Ishikari, Japan. This program came about as a result of the similarities between the two towns - resource based communities reliant upon salmon as a major economic generator. Ishikari's Come Back Salmon program was, for Warren, a very important example of healthy salmon conservation measures.
A conservation and pen rearing program was started in 1985 at the April Point marina by the Peterson family. Every spring chinook or coho salmon, or both, are trucked in from the Quinsam Hatchery in Campbell River and raised in salt-water net pens for 4 - 8 weeks. In late August and early September these fish return to the site of their release.
The Fisheries Minister of Canada benefited from Warren's participation on the Sport Fishing Advisory Board for 20 years. He also served on the Minister's Advisory Council on commercial and sport fishing regulations for 3 years. In addition, Warren spent 10 years on the Southern Panel for the Pacific Salmon Commission, advising negotiations between US and Canada for regulations and conservation of all salmon species.
In short, Warren loves fish and fishing. That's why he's spent so much time in his life as a proponent of sport fishing and salmon conservation. There's nothing he likes better than being out on the water fishing, except maybe taking you along for one of the most interesting fishing trips you will ever experience.
