Fly fishing for rainbow and brown trout is available year round throughout much of Canterbury, with each new season starting October 1st. However, the favoured high country fly fishing season runs from the first weekend in November till the end of April.
Small lake and streams that eventually join the larger river systems are snow fed from the high mountains, which run the length of the South Island. These lakes and streams are known to captivate the hearts of anglers from the world over.

Sight fishing for trout is definitely the most popular option, fishermen come to hunt a quarry, this is typically small stream fly fishing in the magnificent high country near the Southern Alps.
