The Basics of Rock Climbing

This class will focus on the fundamental skills of rock climbing, including: knots and rope skills, belaying, rappelling, as well as climbing techniques and movement. This course is recommended for those with little or no climbing experience.

Intermediate Rock Skills

This course is designed for those who have climbed in the gym, or are approaching rock climbing with a mountaineering background. Emphasis will be on single pitch climbing systems including: lead belaying, introduction to anchor systems, rappelling, and more focus on climbing movement and technique.

Advanced Rock Skills

We offer this course for experienced climbers wanting to gain more independence and confidence at the crag. Advanced curriculum may include: more complex anchors and setting up top-rope systems, introduction to traditional climbing, and multi-pitch climbing systems.

Learning to Lead Climb

This class is for those with a base of top rope skills and experience, ready to start leading, building their confidence and understanding of the fundamentals of leading. It is also for those with little lead experience who want to build better safety Judgment and lead with more confidence. We will work through a progression, establishing solid Judgment and understand the fundamental techniques and tools of lead climbing. Curriculum will be presented with a balance of instruction and hands on practice. The small class size ensures that each participant receives individualized attention. A minimum of four students is required to run the class.

Self-Rescue for the Recreational Climber

Friction knots, belay escapes, Munter Mules, Clove Hitches; these are seldom used but essential to know for the advanced climber. These classes will cover a base of skills and put them together into systems for self-rescue and more efficient safe climbing for the advanced recreational climber.

Intro to Self-Rescue

Climb with more confidence. This course is designed for those interested in learning the tools and techniques of self-rescue adapted for the recreational climber. Previous climbing experience required. Practice will focus on top rope and single pitch scenarios. A minimum of four students is required to run the class.

Advanced Self-Rescue

Learn some tricks of the guide trade. An AMGA trained professional will share skills and techniques for more efficient, confident and effective multi- pitch climbing, with an emphasis on awareness and anticipation of potential hazard and belay management. This class provides an opportunity to learn and practice advanced self-rescue systems for multi-pith climbing, A solid base of Intro self-rescue fundamentals required for this class. A minimum of four students is required to run the class.

Adventure Race Competitor Skills Training and Testing

We provide instruction and training specific to race requirements. We can also present and practice techniques for more efficient and confident movement trough technical terrain. Arrange testing for climbing skills required for adventure race competitors with an AMGA Certified Guide.

Kids Camps

Chockstone Climbing Guides is proud of the quality they bring to the Kids Camps. Our camps are for the teenager that wants to explore all aspects of climbing. Our goal is to promote a sense of life-long learning into climbing, personal growth and an appreciation for the outdoors. We will establish and develop individual goals, create opportunities for exposure to new climbing styles and techniques in a safe, supportive environment. Drawing from twenty years experience instructing/directing camps for teenagers, Jim Ablao and his staff provide exceptional instruction and care for every camp participant. Not only will we get in tons of amazing climbing, we will get in lots of play, slack lining, balance activities and games, problem solving exercises, yoga and fun with human tricks. Training can be fun too! Being a part of new, small community for a week is another learning opportunity. Everyone has to take individual responsibility so that we can work as a team. We also get in a river rafting trip on the Deschutes on a mid camp rest day, along with exploration of local caverns and other geologic wonders.
