The finest Blacktail Deer hunt in Alaska just keeps getting better! We are constantly trying to improve our hunts using our own experience and suggestions from our clientele. These improvements include Saturday departures, direct flights to the boat, a diesel furnace, a new crab block and king crab pots, more gear storage, and many others. We thank you for your suggestions and help in making this hunt even better. While we can not control the weather or the deer population, exceptionally mild winters in 1999 through 2006 have helped the herd increase rapidly and helped to keep our hunters success rate near 100%. If you have been thinking about hunting Sitka Blacktail on Kodiak, now is the time! 2006 was a banner year - great hunting, large deer populaltion and great success rate.
Our 2007 hunts will once again be 8 days and 7 nights long, we have found this to be the best hunt length. Our 16th season on Kodiak is scheduled to begin on the last Saturday of September, with hunts starting each Saturday through early December. Hunts begin in Kodiak on Saturday mornings with chartered flights directly to the boat located at the south end of Kodiak Island in the Olga Bay area, we prefer to keep the boat on site in protected waters and fly you right to where the action is. The first hunt of the season actually takes you by boat from Kodiak to the hunting grounds and can be extended to provide some fantastic fishing opportunities. The last hunt of the season brings you back by boat to Kodiak providing the chance to explore some new hunting areas and see some of the island.
Accomodation:
Our boat, the Outer Limits, a 60' "Little Hoquiam" charter yacht, is a Coast Guard licensed vessel. We limit the number of hunters to six. The vessel is equipped with three private cabins with individual bathrooms, a bunk room, shower, washer, dryer, 110v power, tv/dvd, stereo, state of the art electronics, diesel furnace, freezer and many other features added to make your hunt more enjoyable. It is constantly manned by two Coast Guard licensed masters with years of experience in the area.
Once on board you will be briefed about the boat and can get your gear stowed in the bunkroom. After you are settled in we can issue licenses and tags and get in an afternoon hunt, go pull the crab pots, or just take it easy the rest of the day. The area offers a wide variety of hunting options from beach hunting to hiking into mountain saddles to stand hunting with a rifle or a bow (or hand gun). The island supports over 100,000 deer and several mild winters in a row have populations at their highest level in recent years. Days start off with a hearty breakfast then skiff transportation to that days chosen location. Hunters are usually dropped off in pairs with each pair given a hand held radio for safety or early pick up. You can enjoy a hearty lunch in the field and look forward to a hot dinner that may include New York Steak, BBQ ribs, Baked Ham, "Thanksgiving" Turkey, and of course Venison and all you can eat Crab!
Notes:
A non-resident hunting license is $85, tags are $150 each and three may be purchased. Other costs are airfare to Kodiak, your lodging in Kodiak, tax, gratuity and $10 for each wax box.
