Fishing:
Fishing is excellent in Deer Lake for Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Yellow Perch, Bullhead (a more likely catch in the evenings), white sucker, rainbow smelt, lake trout and the odd pickerel. Both smallmouth bass and yellow perch are successfully angled, adjacent most of the time to the shoreline and shoals. Frogs, minnows and artificial lures meet with equal success.
The northern section of the lake is most productive for both smallmouth bass and northern pike. Pike favor "fast and flashy" when it comes to lures. We find trolling more successful than casting when it comes to the great Northern Pike. Northerns like warm water. In spring, they will be in shallow bays - usually over weed beds. As summer comes, they will move a little deeper, but still gravitate toward structure. Pike hunt for food in the morning and evening. They are among the best eating fish that any freshwater situation can produce. Their firm, flaky, white flesh has a more robust flavor than their #1 rival, the walleye.
Children will catch lots of fish just fishing off our docks.
Ice Fishing meets with great success for northern pike, lake trout and pickerel. Heated 4-Man Huts with tip-ups are available during the winter months.
Lake Cruises:
The Chief Commanda II, located at North Bay’s Waterfront only 45 minutes away, is the first all aluminum, catamaran (twin-hull) passenger vessel in Canada that offers 1.5 to 4 hour cruises from brunch on the French River to dinner on it’s sunset cruise around Callendar Bay. The M.V. Chippewa III cruises the world's largest and most beautiful concentration of islands in Parry Sound. The 30,000 Island Cruise from Parry Sound onto Georgian Bay is another unique cruise and worth the 1-hour drive. Group Rates available.
Country Driving:
Country driving is at its finest as you ramble along the back roads and spend the afternoon viewing the countryside and discover the hidden talents of the many local artists and artisans and historical landmarks, such as Bummer’s Roost on Nipissing Road. (It’s location is noted on MTO road maps!)
Old Nipissing Road, Old Muskoka Road and Old Rye Road, signify a group of long forgotten colonization roads that brought the first settlers to their promised tracts of free land in the north. This area was originally a communal hunting and fishing ground, traditional to the Huron, Ojibwa and Algonquin peoples. These traditional users agreed to lead early explorers along the more accessible waterways, skirting their precious hunting area in order to protect it.
