The rich plankton from the mangroves surrounding Yap host one of the world's largest resident populations of Manta Rays.

The Pacific Manta Rays found in Yap are scientifically known as Manta Birostris . With wingspans of 16 to 20 feet these gentle giants may weigh up to 3000 lbs.

They come to feed at two channels (Miil and Goofnuw) as the outgoing tide carries with it water rich in plankton. There are also cleaning stations where the mantas are serviced by cleaner wrasses that preen parasites from their gills.

Not to be confused with Sting Rays, Mantas do not have a spine or stinger on their tail and pose no threat to divers.
