| The 'New Castle' from which the city derives its name was founded in 1080 by Robert Curthose, son of William the Conqueror, on the site of a Roman fort. It was originally a fortified enclosure of clay and wood, but was rebuilt in stone in the late 12th/early 13th century. Added to the site at this time were the keep, a gatehouse, and an enclosing wall. These have survived numerous alterations over the years - though the curtain wall no longer exists in its entirety. |
