A masterpiece of religious architecture and a major centre of Learning in the Middle Ages, Armenia's Haghpat Monastery was placed on UNESCO'S World Heritage List in 1996. The monastic complex was built soon after Sanahin during the time of King Abbas of the Bagratouni family (928-951).
