| Built in 1751, the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace, in Saunderstown, Rhode Island, was the home of America's foremost portraitist of George Washington. It lies on a pretty country road along little Mattatuxet River. The adjacent 18th-century snuff mill was the first in America. The site includes a gristmill and herring reserve, where river herring migrate up a fish ladder. You can hike the trail along the river. |
