Day 1 Arrive Kilimanjaro • Moshi, Tanzania
Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (for evening arrivals, we recommend an extra night at the base hotel to rest before the climb). You will be met and transferred to your base hotel in Moshi (45min.drive).
Welcome to Africa! This simple hotel provides a warm welcome to climbers. You will spend some time this evening with your mountain guide preparing for your climb with a briefing and supervised packing, followed by dinner at your hotel. Keys Hotel or similar (D)
The Keys Hotel, your base hotel, is located in Moshi and is one of the most popular for climbers. It has a swimming pool, indoor bar and garden area, patio, restaurant and M-Net television coverage. The rooms are clean and comfortable. Showers are en-suite with hot/cold water. The staff are very friendly and 'nothing is too much trouble'. The bar is popular for locals and climbers sharing stories!
Day 2 Begin Marangu Route Climb • Mandara Hut
Climb briefing and breakfast and then you will be transferred to Marangu Gate (6000ft) to register and begin your climb. Registration of passport numbers etc., this usually takes about 1-2 hrs. Today’s walk is just a half-day (3-4hrs), but will give you an opportunity to find your rhythm and enjoy these lush lower altitudes. Since this day is through mountain rainforest, be prepared for the path to be muddy and slippery. If you have arrived at Mandara Huts early, there is a beautiful 20-minute walk to Maundi Crater.
Mandara Huts (9000ft) (BLD)
Mandara Huts: This is a group of comfortable, wooden A-frame huts. The largest cabin has a downstairs dining area and an upstairs dormitory with bunk beds and mattresses; smaller huts sleep 8 each. The total capacity is 60. Water is piped into site from springs above and flush toilets are behind the main cabin.
Day 3 Horombo Hut (12,500ft)
Today’s hike will cover about 15kms (approx. 5hrs) and after a short while, you emerge from the forest belt onto the grasslands near the volcanic cone of “Kimangi Marangu” (little chief). This was once an important “rain making” site. Here we have our first views of the sprawling plains far below. The night is spent at Horombo, near the beginning of the misty moorlands with their giant lobella and ground sel.
Horombo Hut (BLD)
Horombo Huts: The buildings are similar to Mandara, but total capacity is 120. Water is piped from the stream behind the huts. Do not use this stream or its valley as a waste disposal area. There are platform toilets south-east of main hut, about 80 m down the slope and new flush toilets have been built within the complex of small huts.
Day 4 Kibo Hut (15,000ft)
A hard day’s climb to Kibo – covering 13kms. 6-7 hours will be spent crossing the barren sub alpine terrain of the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Upon arriving Kibo, you have an early dinner and a few hours of fitful sleep before heading out for the summit. Kibo Hut (BLD)
(Option of extra night on the mountain)
Kibo Huts: This stone built blockhouse with a small dining room and a number of 1dormitory rooms leading off a main corridor has bunk beds and mattresses for 60 people. Water: None so bring an adequate supply from the 'Last Water' stream above Horombo Hut. Platform toilets are behind the hut (to the southwest).
Day 5 Summit (19,340ft) • Horombo (12,500 ft)
Just after midnight (1:00am), you start out on the final leg. Following your guide’s lantern along the switchback trail, you stop frequently to catch your breath in the thin air. This is the steepest and most demanding part of the climb; it can take up to 5 hours to reach Gillman’s point (18,636ft) to see the sun rise behind Mawenzi peak. If you are up to it, walk a further 1hr around the crater and up to the highest point – Uhuru Peak (19,340ft) – the rooftop of Africa! After congratulatory pictures, begin the rushed descent, sliding down scree. Return to Horombo for overnight (total hiking time 12-15 hours). Horombo Hut (BLD)
Day 6 Final Descent • Base Hotel
An easier paced walk down to the gate at Marangu where you bid your climb staff farewell and then transfer to your lodge for a welcome hot shower, comfortable bed and lively conversation. Keys Hotel (BLD)
