A week exploring western Newfoundland and southern Labrador. The holiday features Gros Morne (the Galapagos of geology), the New World's only Viking settlement established in 1000 by Leif Ericson, the northern edge of the Appalacian Mountains, the 16th century's world whaling capital, North America's oldest burial mound, whales, birds, wildflowers, and icebergs. This gentle adventure features wild days exploring majestic scenery and comfortable nights in cozy, local hotels.

* Itinerary

- Day 1

Arrive Deer Lake Airport, Deer Lake, Newfoundland, Canada (YDF). Travel to Gros Morne for the evening.
(D)

- Day 2

Gros Morne provides one of the world's great geology lessons as we learn about rising oceans and visit a spectacular inland fjord. After a 2.5 hour boat trip in the morning we explore beaches, dunes, and spectacular coastline while looking for moose and caribou among the forests and wildflowers.
(B) (L)

- Day 3

Today we travel to the centre of the earth to learn about the birth of an ocean and the death of a continent. We view rare serpentine plants while exploring the Tablelands - a huge 80 square kilometer portion of the earth's crust that has been exposed by ancient mountain building. Walking trails, wildlife, and more spectacular scenery are featured today.
(B) (L)

- Day 4

Today we drive north to catch the Labrador ferry. Along the way we view "the Arches", dramatic limestone tunnels carved over the centuries by the Atlantic. The ferry ride may require an early rise but it is a highlight with whales, seals, icebergs, and pelagic seabirds all commonly seen. This is a small local ferry service and the schedule has varied yearly and can be influenced by weather but based on our year's of experience it is likely we will enjoy a relaxing and memorable drive with time for wildlife and wildflowers. Overnight in Labrador!

- Day 5

Today we feature the oldest burial mound in the new world and learn about ancient North America. We also visit Red Bay, the 16th Century's whaling capital of the world where over 1000 Basques laboured to supply the whale oil that lit the lamps of the Renaisance. We also visit Canada's second highest lighthouse and look at ancient tropical reefs. Early in the year these reefs can be a wrecking ground for icebergs. Enjoy a second night in Labrador and a special local dinner featuring Labrador flavours.

- Day 6

Today we return to Newfoundland via another exciting ferry trip through the rich waters of the Straits. Once we arrive on land following this whale, seabird, and iceberg rich marine voyage, we travel north to L'Anse aux Meadows - the only authenticated Viking Site in North America and a United Nations (UNESCO) World Heritage Site. The ground where you stand and where the Norse stood 10 centuries ago looks out at the northern extreme of the Appalachians. Overnight in St. Anthony.
(B) (L)

- Day 7

Today we explore beautiful St. Anthony for an hour or two before returning to Deer Lake. We also stop to explore the Maritime Archaic Indian exhibit at Port au Choix National Historic Park. This is the last archaeological site we visit on this holiday; considered by experts to be North America's most diverse archaeological adventure. Overnight in Corner Brook - our second city.
(B) (L)

- Day 8

Depart for home. Your leader will have some great suggestions for siteseeing should your schedule allow it.
