Windmills and canals, stone villages and pine forests, vineyards and half-timbered wine towns supplant each other to supply the decor. Riesling grapes supply the wine, and every type of grain supplies the beer. Trier says it is Europe's oldest city. Luxemburg is the EEC's smallest country, Brugge and Gent inspired Memling and Rubens, and are sure to inspire you.
Your Itinerary
Day 1:
Train to Brugge. Our trip meets in the beautiful "Venice of the North." Discover this charming city, and be sure to get your fill of some of the local specialties: mussels, French fries (they're really Belgian), waffles, and North Sea shrimp.
(D)
Day 2:
A full day in Brugge. Go for an afternoon loop ride out to the ocean. Or just use the steed to explore Brugge's stunning churches and guild halls, convents and canals.
(B)
Day 3:
Brugge to Gent. Following Flanders' oft-dramatic canals to another city with too much to see. Past the windmills which once drained the undersea polders, and along tow-paths lined with massive trees planted by King Leopold.
(B) (D)
Day 4:
On to the Ardennes for the next two days. In addition to biking, visit the Grottes de Han, an underground cavern so massive that you go in by tram and come out by boat.
(B) (D)
Day 5:
A final day in the Ardennes, to the Belgium/Luxembourg border. Stop by Houffalize, where gnomes run a brewery using piney Ardennes spring water. Or at least you think they're gnomes if you drink enough of the beer.
(B) (D)
Day 6:
Luxembourg to Germany. An extraordinary ride through most of Luxembourg. We bike to Trier, on the banks of the Mosel. Trier proudly proclaims its Roman past and celebrates the present with delicious rieslings to compliment Germany's most interesting cuisine.
(B) (D)
Day 7:
Trier to the Rhine. Vineyards cover every inch of arable land, and much that looks like it isn't. A full day along the Mosel Valley's gorgeous bike path, for car-free cycling. Trips ending here disband in this evening, but include the night's lodging to get you to your next project or flight.
(B)
Day 8:
Connection/flight day. If continuing to Switzerland (or subscribe to this optional add-on) today is a pleasure cruise. Literally. Travel up the Rhine by ship, relaxing on the foredeck with a glass of your favorite beverage. Afternoon trains carry you towards your next project.
