Mountain biking and hiking in the land of fjords, glaciers, wild flowers, and Vikings.
Fjord boats, railways on mountainsides, and your legs, carry you over every conceivable terrain.
Your Itinerary
Day 1:
Oslo to Finse. Start off on the Oslo-Bergen railway, an engineering marvel. It draws a line across some of the world's harshest mountains, culminating in eternal snows at 4,000ft., on the same latitude as Fairbanks, Alaska. Go for a glacier walk, read the polar bear warnings, retreat hurriedly to the hotel lobby for a hot chocolate....
(D)
Day 2:
Finse to Myrdal. Mountain bikes start us on a 3-day descent, quickly reaching vegetation via an old Hanseatic trail. Alumni of our trips rank this ride among our most spectacular.
(B) (L) (D)
Day 3:
Myrdal loop day, via Voss. A day trip by bike and train to Voss, at sea level. The folk museum at Voss clearly illustrates the effect of central heating on farmhouse living....
We double back via train to set us up for a descent down the Sognefjord.
(B) (D)
Day 4:
Myrdal to Osterbo via Flam. Today we descend a spectacular gorge to the Sognefjord, Norway's longest.
In Flam we bid farewell to our bikes and take a country (wilderness?) bus up to our "hutte" - a hiking refuge that offers more comfort than some hotels.
(B) (L) (D)
Day 5:
Aurlandsdalen Hiking. The first of two days of remarkable walking surrounded by some of the most beautiful and unusual scenery we know. This wild valley is one that Norwegian hikers refer to with awe, and they are THE arbiters of taste in the matter.
(B) (L) (D)
Day 6:
More Aurlandsdalen Hiking. We make day trips from our base "hutte," over moors, down deep dales, past cascading waterfalls and along idyllic brooks.
(B) (L) (D)
Day 7:
Aurland - Bergen, train to Oslo. A sedate fjord ferry carries us through the lovely splendor of the Sognefjord. then up the stunning Naeroyfjord, Norway's narrowest, to Gudvangen. The country's smallest zip code is on the banks: six houses with their own post office! An overnight sleeper train returns us to Oslo.
