The area we stay in, known as the Cultural Center, is home to many of Bali's most famous artists, carvers, dancers and musicians. Our activities are designed to give you the best possible access to a culture that is experiencing an artistic Golden Age. The program includes participating in festivals and performances, visiting museums, galleries, temples and other important sites, coupled with an opportunity to roll up your sleeves to study a traditional craft under the guidance of skilled artists.

Your Itinerary

Day 1 - Depart USA from Los Angeles for an unescorted flight to Bali aboard regularly scheduled Airlines. Cross international dateline and lose one day, which is made up on your return.

Day 2 - Arrive in Bali at 8:30 AM, where you will be met by your Instructor Judy Slattum and transported to our accommodations in Ubud. We will take time to relax and unpack. After lunch, first language class and orientation session followed by a walking tour of town to familiarize you with money changers, postal pickup, clinic and market. Afternoon and evening are free to relax or experience a traditional massage. Includes: (B)

Day 3 - Orientation session followed by visit to Puri Lukisan, Ubud's oldest art museum, and Neka Gallery, with the finest collection on the island. Public transportation back to Ubud. After lunch, classes in mask carving, batik, and water color begin. Includes: (B)

Day 4 - Language and orientation session followed by excursion to Mas and Singappadu, home of Bali's famed wood and mask carvers. Afternoon classes continue. Evening performance of Kecak dance. Includes: (B)

Day 5 - Walk to Pengosekan village to visit home of basket makers, painters, and carvers. On the way, stop at Agung Rai, the area's largest gallery. Afternoon classes continue. Includes: (B)

Day 6 - Morning visit to the gallery of women artists and visit to a children' art class, followed by Gamelan workshop to understand the role of the instrument in performance. Afternoon classes continue. Evening performance of classical Legong dance by the area's best troupe. Includes: (B)

Day 7 - Island tour to North Bali, stopping at the state Temple of Mengwi, surrounded by a beautiful moat. Following this, we wind our way through the volcanoes to Bedugul, where we visit the fruit and flower market and Ulu Danu, Bali's most beautiful temple dedicated to the Goddess of Lakes and Streams. Day 8 - Free Day. You may plan your day as you wish. Includes: (B)

Day 9 - Classes change to morning schedule. Afternoon visit to the heron preserve at Petulu village, followed by hike through small villages and undulating rice fields. Evening performance of Mahabarata dance. Includes: (B)

Day 10 - Classes continue. Afternoon seminar on the differences between Western and Balinese dance. Includes: (B)

Day 11 - Classes continue. Afternoon excursion through the lush terraced rice fields of Tampaksiring and the ancient stone monuments at Gunung Kawi, as well as Goa Gadja (the "Elephant Cave") an ancient Hindu/Buddhist temple at Bedulu. Evening performance of Ramayana dance by village childrens' group. Includes: (B)

Day 12 - Classes continue. Afternoon excursion to the old Hall of Justice in KlungKung to view the traditional ceiling paintings and a visit to an artist's home in Kamesan village. Includes: (B)

Day 13 - Last day of classes. Show of batiks, water colors, and masks. Evening feast of Balinese food (ristaffel) and private performance of Frog mask dance entertainment in Batuan village. Includes: (B)

Day 14 - Two week tour concludes. Free day for three week tour. Includes: (B)

Day 15 - Island tour through the terraced rice fields of East Bali to hillsides, stopping to observe the double ikat weaving demonstration and the making of traditional palm-leaf books and the unique basket weaving process of the aboriginal village of Tenganan. On to the home of a high priestess who weaves the ceremonial songlet cloth, and then a visit to the Dutch colonial-style Raja's palace at Amlapura. Evening in Candi Dasa Beach. Includes: (B)

Day 16 - Optional snorkeling excursion to the "blue lagoon.." After lunch we proceed through the back roads and some of Bali's most beautiful terracing, stopping at a former artists enclave to visit a weaving factory. Return to Ubud. Includes: (B)

Day 17 - Morning talk on the symbolism of Balinese temple offerings, followed by a workshop in creating them. Afternoon visit to the studio of a leather shadow puppet maker. Includes: (B)

Day 18 - Tour and transfer to south Bali and the capital city of Denpasar, stopping along the way to see the lively Barong Dance in Batubulan, village of stone carvers, followed by a demonstration of stone carving. Next, a guided tour of the Anthropological Museum. A special visit to Surya's family home includes a lunch of traditional food, prepared by his sister and a tour of the compound. The day concludes with sunset on one of the best beaches in Bali. Evening at Jimbaran. Includes: (B)

Day 19 - Day free to enjoy Jimbaran, a fishing village with one of the most beautiful beaches in Bali. There is extensive shopping nearby at the tourist mecca of Kuta, and several interesting temples in the area you could also visit. Includes: (B)

Day 20 - Transit and departure to USA. Make connections to Denpensar and your flight back to the USA. Includes: (B)

Day 21 - Flight to USA
