Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive in Catania airport, private transfer to B&B at a 150 year old manor house on a winery estate in Mount Etna's foot hills near Linguaglossa. The local family give you a warm welcome, show you around the estate and taste their wines with you. Welcome dinner in a typical restaurant.
Day 2: Optional walk in the Mount Etna foothills on black volcanic sand paths with green and gold trees overlooking the blue sea. At a hillside winery, savor lunch of cheeses and antipasti and taste their Etna wines on their deck with lovely views. Drive to Lingualossa to walk in this small town, meet a local resident who shares her experiences living there during Mount Etna’s 2002 eruption. About 4:00 start your cooking lesson on authentic seafood dishes at a restaurant with the effervescent owner and chef son. Drink Prosecco wine and congratulate yourselves. Dinner of your creations with good Etna wines.
Day 3: Explore Taormina with local guide and wonderful storyteller with a vast knowledge of history and local lore. Discover fascinating layers of history at the Greek theater with spectacular views of Mount Etna and the sea. Admire well-preserved 14th century palazzos on narrow streets and alluring bakeries full of Sicilian treats. Lunch is on your own – perhaps at a relaxed local wine bar. Drive up to a home in Linguaglossa for an authentic Sicilian experience with the charming, hospitable family. Have fun making maccheroni, tomato sugo and other genuine local dishes with the mother in her kitchen. Around their table, eat your creations together with the family.
Day 4: Leave at dawn, catch the 8:30 a.m. boat in Milazzo to arrive for lunch at the Aeolian island of Stromboli. Check into a pretty three star hotel on the beach with amazing views of the black sand and blue sea. Free time to explore the town with its white buildings and lush gardens on streets too narrow for cars, or laze on the black sand beach. Lunch on your own. About 4:00 take your demonstration cooking class in a restaurant with a local chef, who teaches you typical island dishes in his unique fusion style. Enjoy your chef's creations and good wines on the restaurant patio.
Day 5: Free morning to laze at the beach, wander the quaint streets, browse in shops. Enjoy lunch on your own. In the afternoon take an optional, fascinating two-hour boat trip around Stromboli. Stop to walk in Ginostra, home to 27 residents. View the steep, black Sciara del Fuoco hillside where volcanic fire runs down from the crater to the sea.
Late afternoon, choose from easy, intermediate or challenging hikes up Stromboli. Hike in the light along the hillside to a restaurant to dine and watch the volcano hurling its fire into the night sky or take a taxi to the restaurant. Or take a challenging hike 900 meters to the top of Stromboli by daylight, view the volcano in action and hike down in the dark with head lamps. Celebrate with a cold beer in the piazza!
Day 6: Leave Stromboli by boat for Sicily's mainland. Private minivan to your lovely three star villa hotel in Taormina with panoramas of the coast and Mount Etna. Lunch on your own. Enjoy a farewell dinner at a great restaurant in Taormina.
Day 7: After breakfast, depart reluctantly for Catania airport.
