A long long time ago in a place called Africa, when wild animals roamed the plains freely and early man lived in rock shelters, the Xam Bushman lived quite peacefully hunting and gathering.
They lived in a garden of eden and food and water were plentiful. Some times they would struggle to survive when severe drought would challenge them to move on to areas in the South of the African Continent where there were permanent supplies of water. One such place is the Cedarberg Mountains, a spiritual homeground of the Xam Bushman.
One can find numerous rockpaintings in this unspoilt garden, it is truly natures paradise and other than the bright sun in a clear blue sky, the sound of birdsong and trickling water and the rustle of a slight breeze in the nearby fragrant rooibos tea bush you can enjoy a peace and a quiet like nowhere else in the world!
You can soak this peace up and feel good for it, it recharges your life energy and you come away feeling that something special has touched you. Perhaps it could be our primeval instinct talking to us...
One of these delightful paintings waiting for you to come and see it, is of a baby Zebra trying to stand on its wobbly legs for the first time... You just want to embrace this small creature as if it were your own child. This painting can be seen in the open air on a rockface, it is one of the earliest works of art ever and the delicacy of the painting to impart such tenderness speaks volumes for the skills of the painter...
These people were experts in survival and they are able to teach us lifeskills today that we in our modern world have long ago forgotten, that includes the use of plant medicines that might find cures for common ailments such as eczema, obesity and so much more. Rooibos tea, that grows wild here in the Cedarberg mountains, has become so popular as it contains a high level of anit-oxidant and it is just good for you...
The paintings of the Bushman go back as far as 28,000 years ago and they were painting almost to the present day. you can see paintings of a Portugese Galleon on its voyage of discovery some 300 years old! Yes they painted us in our funny clothes as well, we Europeans, as we first arrived on these shores to explore. (The Portugese, The Dutch and the British). I wonder what they thought of us? Who were these extraordindary painters? We know who the Bushman were and how they looked as remarkably they are still living today although their population is tiny. They were much smaller than we are, and they lived in and under rock shelters. They did not have many possessions and the whole clan or family group would share their wealth. They spoke a very complex language which is more difficult than present day Chinese with a lot of clicks in it.
A large piece of land was given to the Xam Bushman in the Kalahari in South Africa, and it is hoped that this settled population will be able to sustain itself and find a way of surviving in the modern world according to their needs that will be mutually beneficial, where we can all gain something.Funds are being provided for education and to promote their well being.
At the same time it is hoped that as the paintings become more widely appreciated and visited by local and overseas tourists then a part of the funds generated in this area can go towards helping to protect and conserve this human treasure that South Africa is blessed with and given to it by its first rainbow people the sons and daughters of Africa!
