Your Itinerary

Day 1:
Landing at Sofia airport. Dinner in Sofia and transfer to the observation spots, by a night train, sleeping car.
(D)

Day 2:
The train arrives early in the mourning. Accommodation at a hotel for 1 night. Each room is heated and has a bathroom/WC with running hot water. The hotel is situated in a park, close to the sea , and the tourists can watch birds that fly over, roost or feed from their room's balconies. After breakfast at the hotel's restaurant our real birdwatching tour will begin with a few minutes drive to the lakes close to the hotel. The lakes are surrounded by hills covered with oak forests, and they are very important wetlands for both breeding and migrating birds. All the year round dozens of very rare and interesting species of birds can be observed here. Those of greater interest during the winter season are: Dalmatian Pelican, Pygmy Cormorant, White-headed Duck (all three are globally threatened species), Bittern, Great White Egret, White-tailed Sea Eagle.

Day 3:
Transfer to the next main point for the trip follows. We'll have a lunch stop at a forest restaurant in a hilly area, which descends in rolling hills down to the very seashore. On the hills , on the upside of the road there are beautiful oak forests. Interesting birds to watch there are: Great Spotted, Middle Spotted , Lesser Spotted, Green, Grey-headed and Black Woodpecker, Short-toed Treecreeper. Accommodation at hotel for 3 nights. The hotel is on the outskirts of small town, perched on a hill overlooking the sea. The scenery from the hotel is spectacular with the glittering blue sea and the nearby hills and valleys. Numerous flocks of geese can often be seen to fly or circle over the hotel.

Day 4:
A trip along the sea shore. This is a real steppe for, as far as the eye can see, there is only the grassy steppe interspersed here and there with scrub and small stunted trees. The steppe is traversed by unexpectedly deep valleys. The coast is rocky, with vertical reddish-orange cliffs falling away from over 100m into the clear bluish green depths of the sea. Here we will have the first opportunity to observe thousands of Red-breasted geese.
(B) (L) (D)

Day 5:
A trip to a local lake and its surrounding areas. A large sandy beach separates the lake from the sea. The lake with its extensive reed-beds and open water is one of the most important wetlands for the breeding and migrating birds. Here one can observe the greatest concentration of the globally threatened Red-breasted Geese (sometimes up to about 60 000 individuals) in Europe, and the White-fronted Geese (at times up to 250 000 individuals). Other interesting and possible sightings are also the globally threatened Lesser White-fronted Goose, Long-legged Buzzard, Rough-legged Buzzard, Calandra Lark.
(B) (L) (D)

Day 6:
A trip to another local lake and the surrounding marshland, also of great importance for migrating and breeding birds. The lake is separated from the sea by a long sand bar. The same encounters with birds are likely as on the 5th day. Late afternoon transfer to the hotel and dinner follows.
