Walking safaris are the ultimate in African experience. They allow for a flexibility and a closeness to the essence of Africa that is not possible on any other type of Safari. To follow a Matebele tracker on the spoor of a Lion or Black Rhino is to be transported back into the timeless tradition that is almost lost to the modern world. To approach a single Elephant on foot is worth a hundred sightings of elephant from the back of a vehicle. When you're afoot everything is of significance. Wind direction, terrain, vegetation and how the animal is behaving. To walk in Africa is to be part of Africa. You will have it forever.
Groups are kept to a maximum of seven to ensure group cohesion, convenience and safety. They are accompanied by a fully licenced, armed guide with a minimum of 10 years wildlife experience and extensive first aid training. Each walk is also accompanied by a tracker. The camp is staffed by a chef and two camp attendants. Transport between camps is by four wheel drive vehicle. The camp staff set up and strike campo, do all the cooking, washing up and other camp chores. Laundry is done whenever more than one day is spent in camp. The camp crew and back up vehicle ensure that the guests are not only comfortable but also free to do what they come on safari to do
Normal Backed Up Safari
This safari is fully backed up by a support vehicle, tracker, cook and camp staff to erect the camps and do the camp chores. Walks are done either from the camp or you will drive to a drop off point and walk from there.
Backpacking Safari
This is not backed up by a vehicle. All backpacking equipment is provided and clients are required to carry their own packs. The safari is accompanied by a tracker, cook and camp crew who will help with the carrying of meals and equipment and do the camp chores.
Porter Safari
This is also straight backpacking but with porters to carry your pack.
The five star service at dinner, that you would expect on luxury safari with Leon and Mags Varley.
Tents are custom made, large walk in types constructed of wall and ceiling of shade cloth. This incorporates the unique experience of sleeping in the open with the safety of being in a tent. Beds and bedding provided. There is a shower and toilet tent attached to the back of each tent.
