Autumn in Burgundy? Join Sally Peabody and Henry Talberth, two experienced Francophiles, to enjoy a week in and around Beaune, heart of the fabled Cote D’Or and its charming wine villages. You’ll learn about Bourgogne’s richly textured culture and history of fine winemaking, talk with winemakers about their métier, visit culinary artisans and enjoy tasting your way around Burgundy! This tour will provide an unusual opportunity to settle in to explore Beaune and environs, providing a personal connection to this lovely region and its talented gastronomic artisans.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1, Friday: Arrive in Beaune via train early afternoon. You will meet your hosts Sally Peabody and Henry Talberth at our hotel after transferring from the train station. Check in and refresh yourself. We’ll take an initial walking tour of Beaune, stopping for a light café lunch. This will introduce you to the various cultural opportunities, historic buildings and the wine and culinary shops of Beaune, plus essential shops for everyday services. At 5 p.m. we’ll meet at a stunning century-old wine cellar within the complex at Maison Alex Gambal winery for our opening reception and talk with winemaker Alex Gambal. Dinner to follow, included in tour, at 7:30 at Le Paradoxe, or another excellent local bistro.

Day 2, Saturday: Walking tour led by Henry of the Saturday food market and the expanded ‘flea market’ and brocante in the midst of Beaune’s historic market square. Shop for ingredients for cooking demonstration to follow (for those interested) back at the winery kitchen (all walkable, Beaune is compact and easily explored on foot). Guests are welcome to join Henry in preparing our evening meal. Alternatively, guests are welcome bicycle in the area, to explore Beaune and its various wine related shops, boutiques, even the wine museum, at leisure. There are several tasting opportunities in Beaune including Bouchard et Fils and Patriarche. We’ll assemble at the winery kitchen at 5 p.m. for a leisurely dinner plus wines from Maison Gambal.

Day 3, Sunday: We will have a free morning to walk, bicycle, attend church or relax. At 12:30 we will gather for the short van ride to Au Bon Accueil, a typical bistro located in the hills above Beaune, frequented by French families for leisurely Sunday afternoon dinners. Weather permitting, we will dine en plein air. Scenic ride back to Beaune. Late afternoon and evening free.

Day 4, Monday: At 9:30 a.m. we will have a leisurely exploration of the Cote de Beaune and its picturesque wine villages. We’ll stop in Pommard, Volnay, Meursault, Puligny Montrachet, Chassagne Montrachet, and visit the Chateau de Meursault. Lunch will be scheduled in one of the villages as will winemaker visits. Dinner is on your own and we will have a free evening.

Day 5, Tuesday: At 9:30 a.m. we will have a leisurely exploration of the Cote de Nuits with stops (to be confirmed) at famed wine villages including Nuits St. Georges, Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle Musigny, Vougeot (and Clos Vougeot). We’ll stop for a leisurely lunch at La Toute Petite Auberge and then go on to visit the ancient Cistercian Abbaye de Citeaux. Dinner on your own and evening free in Beaune.

Day 6, Wednesday: We will visit to the Wednesday market in Beaune, followed by preparation of a delicious picnic - lunch à la Bourgogne with Henry. Picnic lunch optional. Free afternoon until 5:00 tasting with Alex Gambal to explore more delicious Burgundies. Dinner at the winery kitchen following our tasting with Alex (included in the tour).

Day 7, Thursday: We have a morning free to bicycle, shop, van available for additional touring in the countryside. At noon we leave for lunch in a typical country auberge, followed by our visit to and tasting with an artisan cheese maker in Arnay le Duc via a route that will take us through the countryside and villages that we have not yet visited. We’ll taste four to six delicious cheeses and will bring wine to accompany the tasting. At night we have a optional dinner at superb Michelin two star restaurant La Lamelloise. This will be a stunning way to celebrate our time together in a beautiful restaurant with exquisite food, wine and memorable service. Note: La Lamelloise is not included in the meals for the tour as not all guests may wish to book this gastronomic meal.
