Come visit the world class resorts at Fernie, Panorama, Castle Mountain and our personal favorite Kicking Horse with our local guides. Our guides Mike Taylor and Sarah Weinberg have worked in these mountains for years and will be leading this insider's tour of the best skiing in Canada.
Improvements on our tremendously successful BC Trip from last year include, staying at The Royal - refurbished turn-of-the-century-built hotel right in downtown Fernie, an option of skiing with RK Heli Skiing in Panorama and an added option of Purcell Heli Skiing 1 or both of our days in Golden with numerous hotspring potential stops along the way.
Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Calgary - Drive to Pincher Creek
You will fly into Calgary Canada where your Canadian hosts, Mike Taylor and Sarah Weinberg will be waiting for you with our van. Try to be sure to schedule your flight arrival before noon. After the group has arrived and we’ve loaded the gear, we’ll travel to Pincher Creek, which will give us access to one of the local’s favorite spots, Castle Mountain. We will be staying at a beautiful lodge in Pincher Creek, with plenty of local food and local drink. We can even work on some of our Canadian lingo, can you say “aboot?”
Day 2: Ski Castle Mountain
We’ll start day two with a nice breakfast and then off to ski at Castle Mtn in the Flathead Range of the Rockies. Castle is a quiet little local secret with tons of back country to explore. With 2833 vertical feet and over 1600 acres, Castle is known as the ‘Best Kept Secret in the West’. Castle boasts the lightest, driest powder skiing anywhere. After skiing we’ll drive 1 1/2 hours to Fernie and check into The Royal Hotel. The Royal offers world class fare prepared by acclaimed Chef Paul Macnish, The Royal Hotel is Fernie’s “Premier Heritage” Restaurant.
Days 3-4: Ski Fernie
We’ll spend day 3 and 4 exploring the terrain around the resort at Fernie, led by our local expert Sarah Weinberg. If the conditions present themselves, we will have the opportunity to hike some of Sarah’s favorite fresh powder runs. This picturesque little town has become the international destination powder capital of the Kootenays in recent years, mostly due to the Lizard Range being directly in line of a very active precipitation belt that consistantly delivers huge amounts of snow to the area... sometimes referred to as “The Fernie Flurry Phenomenon”. The mountain offers wide open bowls above treeline, steep alpine and treed chutes, and will provide great rewards in exchange for short hikes and traverses. At the end of day four we’ll get back on the road for 2 1/2 hrs to the ski village of Panorama, next to the town of Invermere, where we’ll stay slope-side to Panorama Ski Resort in the modern and super fun village. Natural hotspring option available along the way depending on how the group is feeling after our ski day in Fernie.
Day 5: Ski Panorama
On day five we’ll wake up slopeside to ski at Panorama in the Purcell Range with the option of a day with RK Heli Skiing. From the top of Panorama, you can enjoy the view of a thousand peaks, and from the helicopter I think many more. Thurs evening we’ll check out of the hotel and move on to Golden 2 hours further north in the Columbia River Valley, We’ll be passing by an optional stop at the famous Radium Hotsprings. In Golden, we’ll check into our quaint and comfortable bed and breakfast, where we’ll be for our final 2 nights.
Days 6-7: Ski Kicking Horse
On our last two days we’ll explore Mike’s home mountain of Kicking Horse in the Dogtooth Range of the Purcells. There will be plenty of off-piste possibilities, also the option of a day with Purcell Heli Skiing. As one rides up the gondola at Kicking Horse, the first impression is big. Just when you think you are reaching the top, you realize that you have only gone halfway up. CPR ridge, a spine that connects the top half of the mountain with the bottom half, offers a variety of chutes and drops, some of the most amazing lift accessible terrain in the world.
Day 8: Departure day
After checking out of the hotel in the morning, we’ll have a breakfast together and then drop you off at the airport, where we’ll say our farewells until we see you in Chile to do it all again Andes-style! Be sure to book your flights out in the late afternoon to allow transfers to the airport in Calgary.
