Join us in December for some amazing and extreme photography of winter storm surge, coastal scenery, beaches, mountains, and harbors on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia!
During the winter, storms out to sea produce waves on average of 10 - 15 feet high. However, strong low pressure cells and storms over the northern Pacific Ocean drive large swells toward the coast of the northwest. There is no land between the west coast of Vancouver Island and the east coast of Japan, so there is plenty of running room.
When these rollers hit shallow water they can reach upwards of 30 feet high. The sight, sound, and feeling of these huge waves exploding into the rocky shore, narrow cracks, and blowholes is an experience you won't soon forget.
Inland and bordering the coastline, 5 temperate rainforest communities and a wooded bog community are easily visited, composed of western red cedar, sitka spruce, grand fir and western hemlock, and a variety of understory plants. The forests are an emerald green world of giant, moss-covered trees, small, delicate ground mosses, flowers, patterns and textures. Enough to drive a macro photographer crazy.
Beachcombing reveals hidden places and subjects to photograph up close. Lighthouses, Tofino harbor, surfers, mountains, waterfalls, and winter scenery provide a variety of photography opportunities. This is also the off-season, so we almost have the entire coastline to ourselves.
We will work out of two locations. The first is just south of Tofino, which is at the north end of Chesterman Beach, a long, packed sand expanse that attracts surfers from all over. Rocky stacks off shore make for fine elements in a sunrise or sunset. This is also the north end of the Long Beach Unit of the Pacific Rim National Park, the only National Park on Vancouver Island. The 13,715 hectare Long Beach Unit provides important protection for significant rainforests and amazing marine environments. The second is in Ucluelet, 26 miles south of Tofino, with access to the southern end of the Pacific Rim National Park, the Wild Pacific Trail, and inland locations.
