The Lower Klamath River flows undimmed for 184 miles from Irongate Reservoir near Interstate 5 all the way to the Pacific Ocean, making it one of the longest and largest free flowing rivers in the West. It carries water that drains from five mountain ranges: the Cascades, Siskiyous, Marble, Trinity Alps, and Klamath. The Lower Klamath is a federally designated Wild & Scenic River.
This river has it all! Long lazy floats on sun-drenched days, seemingly endless stretches of heart-pounding Class III whitewater, remote tranquil campsites, secret waterfalls…eagles, herons, otters, osprey, salmon, deer, beaver, trout, wildflowers, butterflies, and the occasional bear… towering mountain views, echoing canyon walls, silent arboreal shade, quaint homestead farms, historic gold-mining towns, Native American ceremonial grounds… you!, floating along, taking it all in from the best seat on the river, many miles and light years away from those very things that make us need a vacation.
Our company can custom design a trip of any length on the Lower Klamath from one to eight days. You can choose a scenic float trip where you do nothing but tan and unwind as you drift languidly, the kids splashing in the calm water; or perhaps a string of days of rigorous whitewater, where your efforts as a paddling team mean the difference between success and swimming Exterminator rapid; or maybe you want to learn a new skill and paddle yourself in one of our stable Inflatable Kayaks under the watchful eye of our experienced guides. Or just maybe you want a taste of it all!
The Lower Klamath River is perfect for everyone: families, vacationers, church/school/youth groups, weekend getaways, thrill seekers, nature lovers, photo hounds and outdoor enthusiasts. The minimum age for children is age six (6); we proudly accommodate disabilities and challenges of all types.
We offer two methods of overnight camping on multi-day trips. "Downriver" style is the more traditional raft trip; all of the camp gear and personal belongings are loaded on a gear boat that is traveling with your group. Once you put in on the river you don't get off until your trip is over. The downriver style allows for more flexibility of where you stop and camp, provides a more remote wilderness experience, and gives a sense of independence and self-reliance.
You can expect tasty riverside meals with an emphasis on grilling and Dutch oven wizardry; quality backpack style tent, bag, and pad sleeping gear; using a basic "groover" rafting toilet in the woods; and feeling completely removed from civilization. The disadvantages of this style are the limitations on what and how much we can carry, despite our best efforts things do get wet, and that in hot dry summers there may be a ban on campfires in remote camps.
The second method of overnight camping is exclusive we call "Pamper the Camper". The Lower Klamath River has a string of US Forest Service campgrounds along Rte 96 which runs above the river canyon and periodically dips down to the river to provide boater access. "Pamper the Camper" utilizes these access points and campgrounds to provide a first class overnight experience by shuttling you off the river to your campsite where our camp host has already unloaded the packed gear truck, set up your cabin tent with cot, arranged an outfitters kitchen to die for, and started a crackling fire in the USFS fire ring surrounded by a circle of super comfy chairs.
You'll be greeted by your personal (and dry!) gear, creative appetizers, a variety of libations, and an enclosed campground toilet. The bigger kitchen allows our chefs to prepare and present meals you will talk about for years, food paired with the very best wines offered in California and Oregon. You can relax with horseshoes or other games, fish with your own tackle, break out your cameras, or maybe play your precious musical instrument. With a truck and trailer, there is almost nothing we can't bring in to make you more comfortable or happy. This method also allows us to cherry pick sections of the river: "So you want to repeat yesterday's whitewater? Let's go!"
