These overnight and (optional) 3-day treks take place in Monahans Sandhills State Park and on private land in Texas’ Chihuahuan Desert. We’ll travel the same Big Bend region of West Texas the U.S. Camel Corps explored in 1859/1860 on the Hartz/Echols expeditions. While the US military scouted fort locations and searched this area for better supply routes to the US/Mexican border, my present-day treks combine desert scenery, history and ecology with the colorful part the Camel Corps played in settling the West.
Texas Camel Treks are camel-assisted walking treks with camels carrying all the gear. Participants will learn to load, unload and work the camels. Hiking is fairly easy, over cattle trails, ranch roads and creek beds. Some camel riding is available depending on terrain. Endless photo opportunities await you in the rugged, but beautiful Big Bend and Trans-Pecos regions of Texas.
In the Big Bend area, we travel ranch roads, cattle trails, creek beds and mountain passes. Guests must be able to hike between 5 and 10 miles per day over varied terrain.
In Monahans Sandhills State Park, we traverse through both active and coppice dunes. Guests must be able to hike between 3 and 5 miles per day in sand dunes.
