We are proud to offer our first luxury bicycle tour to the Northern Coastal region of North Carolina. From the first English colony attempted in America to the Wright brothers’ first flight, the Northern Outer Banks is an area rich in history. Add to that miles of undeveloped seashore, world-class gourmet food, and the finest accommodations, and you have the perfect setting for a bicycle vacation that rewards mind and body.
Cycling: Average mileage of 15 - 50+ per day varies at the options of individual guests. Terrain is flat, but windy days are common. Routes are on back roads with intermittent, light traffic, and on a beach road with a wide, paved shoulder. The tour is suitable for road bikes or hybrid style bikes.
Your Itinerary
Day 1: Edenton, our rendezvous site, offers an idyllic waterfront village complete with beautifully restored historic homes. The Lords Proprietors’ Inn, located in the heart of the historic district, provides us with a gracious meeting place. Two options are available for day one: a guided bicycle tour of area backroads, or a guided walking tour of the historic district. After our activities, we will enjoy a gourmet dinner together--the first of several! (D)
Day 2: After filling up on lemon soufflé pancakes, our leisurely morning warm-up ride takes you past rolling pastures and country farms. An expert guide then takes us on a canoe trip through the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, pointing out the many wonders to be found in this ecological haven. We shuttle that evening to the charming waterfront village of Manteo, our homebase for the next 2 nights. The White Doe Inn, our bed and breakfast, is carefully decorated to reflect turn of the 20th century island life. The evening is yours to explore the hidden corners and picturesque marinas in Manteo. (B) (L)
Day 3: After a gourmet three course breakfast, we visit the historic site of the Wright Brothers’ first flight at Kitty Hawk. We then work off the wonderful calories consumed at breakfast by cycling north through island communities, upscale shopping areas and hidden soundside streets. An optional visit to the Currituck Wildlife Refuge or an optional hike to the fabulous views from the top of the Currituck Lighthouse is slated for the afternoon, or you may pedal back to Kitty Hawk. We regroup for a sunset sailing cruise aboard a topsail schooner and dinner at a Manteo's renowned "1587" restaurant. (B) (L) (D)
Day 4: After another distinctive White Doe Inn breakfast, we shuttle briefly back to the mainland where we bike back to Edenton. At the Lords Proprietors' Inn, showers and a final catered lunch will be ready. (B) (L)
