Not only has the surrounding Cilento National Park been inscribed as a Unesco World Heritage Site but the coastline and waters of Castellabate and Licosa were awarded the European Blue Flag for cleanliness and environmental awareness in 1999.

Rising above Santa Maria is the medieval hilltop village of Castellabate, erected a thousand years ago as a stronghold against the Saracens, offering spectacular panoramic views of the coastline of the Gulf of Salerno.
