Blackwater Lodge was established in 1971 based on the former railway station of the village of Ballyduff which closed in 1967. Blackwater Lodge is an informal, comfortable lodge-style guesthouse in a magnificent location overlooking the world-famous Munster Blackwater - one of Europe’s most spectacular salmon rivers. It’s a no-nonsense, friendly place, where the comfort and enjoyment of salmon anglers is the top priority -truly a specialist sporting lodge. For years, the Blackwater Lodge has been the hideaway of salmon anglers from all over Europe and North America. They return again and again because of our relaxed atmosphere and beautiful location.
Property amenities:
The Lodge offers both guesthouse & self-catering accommodation. For the angling guests, there is a tackle shop where tackle (rods/reel/waders/nets etc.) can be hired. Guides are available, & also instruction (especially in all forms of fly-casting) with Glenda Powell (Lodge proprietress) who is the first woman in the world to be qualified to APGAI-Ireland standard for both salmon and trout fishing. The Lodge has exclusive salmon fishing rights on 16 private beats (approx. 14 miles) on the Cork Blackwater - Ireland’s most famous & second largest river (next to the Shannon). The Lodge beats start only 3 miles above the tidal limit & extend 40 miles upstream, enabling the runs of salmon to be followed in all conditions.
Nearby attractions and activities:
The Blackwater Valley is one of the most beautiful in the whole of Ireland. Not the rugged spectacular scenery of Kerry & Connemara, but wonderful rolling countryside & mountainous areas close by. It is superb unspoilt countryside, with the added advantage that it is not far from civilisation. You are never far away from shopping centres, whether it is for food if you are self-catering, crystal if you collect Waterford glass, or Aran Jumpers if you want to visit the world-famous Blarney Woollen Mills & kiss the Blarney stone at the same time!
We are situated only 1˝ miles (2,6 km) from the village of Ballyduff, which has 4 pubs, 3 shops, a Post Office & a garage. The Heritage town of Lismore is only 6 miles downstream, with its superb castle & gardens, magnificent Cathedral (1633) & Heritage centre. There are also a number of shops & small supermarkets. Try the spectacular drive from Lismore Bridge up the valley of the Owenashad river to the Vee - a pass through the Knockmealdown Mountains giving a wonderful panoramic views over County Tipperary.
Cappoquin is a small town 10 miles downstream & from there there is a wonderful scenic drive for about 12 miles down the estuary of the Blackwater. This ends at mouth of the Blackwater at Youghal - an ancient fishing port where Sir Walter Raleigh was once Lord Mayor etc.
Location:
Situated one mile from the village of Ballyduff on the border of counties Cork & Waterford between the towns of Fermoy (9 miles) & Lismore (6 miles). Cork city 35 miles. Cork airport 38 miles.
